Weight & Portability
When you hear the word heavy duty, you would expect the sewing machine to be really heavy. But Singer 4423 Heavy Duty Sewing Machine is not really that heavy, in fact it is extremely light for a heavy duty sewing machine. It just weighs 14.5 pounds. So it is easy to carry around. There is no included carrying case, you will have to buy it separately.
Usability
Singer says 4423 can go through 9-12 layers of denim (wow, not yet, read drawbacks). It can easily sew vinyl and leather materials. While sewing denim or vinyl you must make sure that you use denim or vinyl needle. Sew slowly while you are working with thick fabrics. Singer 4423 comes with 23 built-in decorative stitches. You can easily select the decorative stitches using the stitch dial on the machine. There is no LCD screen for stitch and control selection, Singer could have included an LCD screen as well, never mind. There is another dial for adjusting the stitch length of Singer 4423 heavy duty sewing machine.
Changing the presser foot is very easy, just press the presser foot release bar and the foot pops out and put the other feet in. You can adjust the presser foot height which lets you sew through thick layers of denim or other stuff. You can use any kind of thread you like. Singer 4423 is capable of sewing 1100 stitches per minute, that’s pretty fast I guess. Its operation is pretty quiet as well.
All accessories are stored in the accessory tray, similar to all top sewing machine brands in U.S. If you remove the accessory tray from the machine, you can do free-arm stitching as well. You can drop the feed dog using the lever at the back. Another thing I really like is the automatic one-step buttonhole. Automatic one-step buttonhole is not something that you find in an entry level sewing machine, but Singer 4423 Heavy Duty Sewing Machine has it.
The 25 year limited warranty includes 25 years on head, 2 years on motor and electronic components and 90 days on belts, bulbs and attachments.
Drawbacks of Singer 4423
Singer 4423 is not a 100% heavy duty sewing machine. It does have a plastic skin. It doesn’t have a lot of built-in decorative stitching (just 23 of them). The machine does strain itself when sewing 8 plus layers of denim, so it is not a good idea to try really thick layers of denim. But it is a good value for money product and it is perfect for beginners.

Overall, Singer 4423 Heavy Duty Sewing Machine is a fantastic sewing machine for a beginner. It is nicely priced as well. But if you want a real heavy duty sewing machine with not much plastic parts, you must consider Janome HD1000 but it costs few more dollars. It is almost double the price to be honest, but it is worth the money.
