Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : HIGH

This machine is one of the most popular embroidery machines available in U.S. It comes with 25 years limited warranty.

You can use SINGER Futura XL-400 as an embroidery machine and as a sewing machine. You can use this embroidery machine as a normal sewing machine once you remove the embroidery unit. This embroidery machine is slightly different from others. In this, you can actually create and edit your own own embroidery designs using the software provided and then transfer it to the embroidery machine using the USB cable. I have always found it difficult to adjust things on the small LCD screen provided on embroidery machines. What Singer has done is that, they have taken away the LCD screen and now all the designs and settings are done on your PC itself, which makes a lot of sense to me. However, you will have to keep both the PC and the embroidery machine on to start working.

There are several add-on softwares available for this machine(bought separately). It comes with 2 hoops, large and small.

Threading SINGER Futura XL-400 is very easy, thanks to Singer’s Swift Smart threading system. You don’t need to go up and down while threading this machine. The drop and sew bobbin makes things super easy. The automatic needle threader seem to be picky. Couple of attempts are needed to thread the needle.

It comes with 6 LED work lights. The LED’s illuminate the work area quite well. You can control the sewing speed by moving the slider forward and backward. The embroidery table is quite big and consumes a lot of space.

It comes with all the essential accessories for sewing and embroidery work. Most of the in-built designs look pretty. It does a good job with larger projects.

Limitations

Singer didn’t include auto punch software in the box. You will have to buy it separately. The machine is louder compared to its competitors, more so when operating high speeds.

Pros

  • Can be used as a sewing and embroidery machine
  • Variety of built-in designs
  • Multihooping
  • Snap on hoops

Cons

  • No automatic thread cutter
  • Auto punch software is not included
With the features SINGER Futura XL-400 provides, it is nicely priced I think. Overall, it is a good entry level embroidery machine. But if you want embroidery feature only, you can consider Brother PE770 which comes in the same price range in U.S and has more versatility as far as embroidery is concerned.
