Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : LOW

Janome 15822 Hello Kitty is a fancy looking, cute sewing machine. It is a mechanical sewing machine. It seems not too many people tried this sewing machine, may be the fancy looks gave them a perception that it is a toy. But no, it is not a toy, it is a quality sewing machine. The machine looks quite attractive, with those kitty graphics on it. Janome 15822 is a compact sewing machine. Clearly Janome is targeting its young users who are just starting out on their sewing lessons. You can see that the stitch selection dials have apple, tulip and bow on it. It is very easy for elders to teach their kids by saying something like ‘turn the dial with bow on it’. It is no fuss learning with Janome 15822.

Janome 15822 comes with 25 built-in stitches. It comes with a one-step buttonhole. Stitch selection and adjustment can be made using the dials. The presser feet are slip-on, you will get 4 slip-on presser feet along with this sewing machine. It has a built-in automatic needle threader as well. Janome 15822 also has a reverse lever, you can tie off the stitches by holding the lever down. It comes with an extra-high presser foot lift feature which will be handy when dealing with multiple layers of fabric.

Usability

The sitches on Janome 15822 are of decent quality. As it is a mechanical sewing machine, it can withstand a lot of rough use. It is built to last. But it does lack some basic features that I would love to see on a beginners sewing machine. They are listed in the section below.

Limitations

The storage compartment is quite small. Janome has sacrificed its storage space for making it more compact. Janome 15822 doesn’t have a drop-in bobbin system, it has a front loading bobbin, which is kind of a drawback especially when you consider the price of this sewing machine. It just has a 3 piece feed dog which means you will have to manually adjust the fabric movement, especially when sewing thick materials like denim. Another limitation is the number of stitches, 25 is just not enough for the price. May be you can say that a child doesn’t need a lot of built-in stitches, but I disagree. Children learn fast and soon they will overgrow this machine.

Pros

  • Attractive
  • Easy to use
  • Sturdy
  • Extra-high presser foot lift
  • Automatic needle threader

Cons

  • No drop-in bobbin system
  • Just a 3 piece feed dog
  • Less number of built-in stitches
  • Priced slightly high

Overall, Janome 15822 will suit you, if your expectations are limited and you don’t worry much about the number of stitches. It is a machine made to last, so you don’t need to worry about the quality. But I am not hugely impressed by this sewing machine as kids will overgrow this machine quite fast. Yes, it can take all the hits from a beginner and still work flawlessly, but feature and price wise I can’t recommend this to you. Alternative models I can recommend are Singer 7258 and Brother CS6000i. Both machines are excellent beginners machines and have many more features than Janome 15822. Singer 7258 is a ‘Women’s Choice Award’ winner for best home sewing machine in U.S and Brother CS6000i is listed among Sewing Machine Reviews list of ‘Machines You Can Buy With Your Eyes Shut’.
