Janome 2206 Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : MODERATE

When I went through the features of Janome 2206, I wasn’t overly impressed with it. It is a basic mechanical sewing machine (too basic for me). It has 6 built-in stitches including a 4-step buttonhole. It can stitch at a speed of 860 stitches/minute, so it has a powerful motor inside. The tension has to be manually adjusted. It comes with snap on presser feet. You can select stitches using the dial. It has free arm sewing capability as well.

Usability

Setting up Janome 2206 was very easy. The stitches are even and of good quality. It is not that heavy since the body is made of plastic. It weighs around 14 pounds. One good feature of this sewing machine is the ease with which you can make simple buttonholes just by turning the dial. Even though 4-step buttonholes are not ideal for beginners, 2206 has the best 4-step buttonhole I have ever come across. The overall build quality of the machine is quite good. As always Janome make quality machines. Janome 2206 is easy to thread even in the absence of automatic needle threader. I have come across so many machines that have useless automatic threader, manual threader on this machine is way better than the automatic threaders of those.

Limitations

Janome 2206 doesn’t have a drop-in bobbin, instead it has a front load bobbin which is pretty old fashioned. Another limitation is that the foot pedal is made of cheap plastic. It just has a 4-step buttonhole instead of 1-step buttonhole, so the buttonhole styles are pretty much limited.

Pros

  • Easy to thread
  • Quality stitches

Cons

  • No drop-in bobbin
  • Cheap looking foot pedal
  • No 1-step buttonhole

Verdict

Overall, Janome 2206 will suit those people who are looking for a mechanical sewing machine with limited features. Yes, it doesn’t have all the features that a modern sewing machine normally have, but it does what it is supposed to do. Amidst the limitations, it does a very good job. It is recommended for those who love mechanical sewing machines.

If you want to consider an electronic sewing machine of the same price range, I would recommend Brother XL2600i which far exceeds Janome 2206 in features and price. It costs few dollars less and has features like 25 built-in stitches, automatic needle threader, drop-in bobbin, 1-step auto size buttonholer etc. Brother XL2600i holds second position in the ‘Top 10 Mostly Bought Sewing Machines In U.S’.
