SINGER 9985 Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : HIGH

This is a feature packed sewing machine for advanced users. Beginners! forget about this, it is way too expensive for you. Singer 9985 has a whopping 960 built-in stitches on board, the highest I ever reviewed on Sewing Machine Reviews. It has a 25 year limited warranty.

Built-in Stitches

960 built-in stitches include

  • 10 essential stitches
  • 21 stretch stitches
  • 919 decorative stitches including alphanumeric
  • 6 styles of alphabets and numerals with memory function
  • 13 fully automatic buttonhole styles

LCD Touch Display

The LCD display on SINGER 9985 is more than just a display, it is more like your sewing assistant. It will give you recommendations based on your stitch selection. The built-in sewing advisor will give you assistance via voice and text. It is a nice feature that will come handy for new users. Forgot to tell you one thing, the  display is touch. It is very responsive as well. The below image shows the display, once you select a stitch it will give you options to adjust the stitch length and width and also which presser foot to use. Here I have selected the stitch #11. The LCD display is very sharp and clear. You will also get a live preview of changing stitch width and length on the left of the screen. The display will also tell you if some setting is not right. SINGER 9985 has the best LCD display in the market I guess.

Usability

The automatic tension for each stitch setting is just perfect. You can make combination stitches on SINGER 9985. You can rely on the user manual, if you have any doubts. It is well written. SINGER 9985 is a smooth machine and it is also very quiet. The quality of stitches are excellent.

It is easy to insert the bobbin as it loads from the top, which is not a surprise feature on a high end machine. Nowadays even the basic machines have this feature. The clear cover for the bobbin will let you keep an eye on the thread supply. The presser foot pressure adjustment is provided at the side of the machine. It easily snaps into place as you turn it. This functionality lets you adjust the pressure applied by the presser foot while sewing. The pressure is automatically adjusted by default, the adjustment option is for those who want to experiment.

The accessory tray is quite spacious. You can change the position of the needle while the machine is stopped, using the Needle Up/Down button. You can control the sewing speed from fast to slow (it gets really slow). The automatic cutter cuts the thread when you press the button, so you don’t have to grab the scissors for cutting them off.

The removable free arm lets you sew pant hems, cuffs and other stuffs. The memory on this machine lets you save up to 60 characters. You can lock your stitches by pressing the automatic locking stitch button. It has a foot pedal which you don’t need most of the time.

Limitations

One big bummer of SINGER 9985 is that the LED work lights are not so bright. In fact it is very dim for my liking. I think it has become quite a trade mark of Singer machines, most models are poorly lit. Singer will have to learn from Brother in that aspect. This machine is quite heavy, it will not be a good choice if portability is your top priority. The auto threader is not the best in the world.

Pros

  • Tons of features
  • Needle up/down
  • Auto-pilot
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Easy to use
  • Quiet

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Tricky automatic needle threader
  • Dim LED work lights

Overall, if you are looking for an advanced sewing machine that has tons of features, never look beyond SINGER 9985. It is a sturdy, quiet and smooth sewing machine. However, some might consider this machine as expensive. But let me tell you one thing, it is worth spending for the quality and features on board.
