Janome Sewist 500 Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : LOW

Janome Sewist 500 is a mechanical, beginners sewing machine. It comes with 25 built-in stitches which include utility stitches, stretch stitches and a 1-step automatic buttonhole. It also comes with a serging stitch.Stitches can be selected using the dial. Another dial is provided for adjusting the stitch length. The bobbin system is jam proof top-load drop-in bobbin, which is pretty much mandatory for a highly priced beginners machine. The bobbins are covered with a transparent cover, which lets you keep an eye on the thread supply.

Janome Sewist 500 is well lit with bright LED work lights. You can easily sew in the dark using the work lights. It comes with an included hard cover. The thread tension on this machine has to be adjusted manually. It also has a built-in automatic needle threader to save eye strain. You can do reverse stitching on this machine by pulling the reverse lever. You can do free arm sewing as well. The presser foot pressure on Janome Sewist 500 is adjustable, which means you can manually adjust the pressure applied by the presser foot on the fabric. It comes with snap-on presser foot.

Usability

Janome Sewist 500 is a user friendly sewing machine. It is lightweight and easy to carry, thanks to the included handle and hard cover. Threading and winding the bobbin is easy, but you will have to follow the instructions in the manual. It is a solidly built sewing machine.

Janome Sewist 500 sewing machine adjusts to thickness changes pretty well. It goes up and over multiple layers of fabric and provides nice, straight and consistent stitches. Its extra high  presser foot lifter comes really handy when sewing with bulky fabrics.

Limitations

Janome could have included some more stitches. 25 built-in stitches for the price is not just enough. Some users have reported a grinding noise coming out of the machine due to misalignment of the gears.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Extra high presser foot lifter

Cons

  • High price
  • Less number of built-in stitches
  • Loud noise

Verdict

Overall, Janome Sewist 500 is a good sewing machine. But I can’t recommend this to you because of the price and the loud noise issue reported by some users. Probably I will recommend it in the future if the price drops at least $50 and Janome fixes the loud noise issue.

An alternative sewing machine I can suggest is the Singer 7258 which has recently won Women’s Choice award for the best home sewing machine. It has a lot of features including 100 built-in stitches and costs much lesser than Janome Sewist 500.
