SINGER 14T968DC Serger Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : MODERATE

SINGER 14T968DC is a 5 thread cover stitch serger. It gives a professional finish to your projects. It has 2/3/4/5 thread stitch options, which really adds to the variety. It has automatic tension which means the tension is automatically adjusted for perfectly balanced stitches. The threading system is color coded for easy threading.

The motor inside SINGER 14T968DC is capable of delivering 1,300 stitches/minute, which means that it has a powerful motor inside. It comes with an attachable clean pocket which catches the trimmed fabric. The carry handle adds to the portability of this machine. It is not too heavy, weighs just around 18.8 pounds.

SINGER 14T968DC comes with snap-on presser feet. It has extra-high presser foot lifter for extra clearance. One good feature of this machine is the upper moveable knife. If you don’t want the machine to trim the fabric, you can keep the knife into nonworking position. The presser foot pressure is automatically set, but you can adjust it manually according to the type of fabric. This machine has a reasonable LED work light. It is not that great, but it does the job. It comes with 25 year limited warranty.

Usability

SINGER 14T968DC is not a serger for beginners. This is a machine for professionals. A good thing is that it can do both overlock and cover stitch. This machine seems to struggle with light fabric such as silk but it does a fine job with others. The auto tension is one of the best I have seen. Threading the machine can be slightly tricky but it will get easier once you get the hang of it.The user manual that comes with SINGER 14T968DC is extremely detailed and most people will find it helpful especially while threading the machine.

Limitations

SINGER 14T968DC does not have free arm capability.

Pros

  • 2/3/4/5 thread stitch capability
  • Wonderful automatic tension
  • Can do both overlock and cover stitch

Cons

  • Struggles with light fabric
  • No free arm
  • Expensive

Verdict

SINGER 14T968DC will be a good choice if you want a machine with overlock and cover stitch option. The threading issues can be easily overcome by reading the user manual thoroughly. The machine is slightly on the expensive side though.

If you are looking for a slightly inexpensive serger with good quality, you can try Brother 1034d. It costs couple of hundred dollars less and has more or less all the features (not exactly) of SINGER 14T968DC. The Brother machine will suit beginners, it is a lot easier to understand and manage. Moreover it is the best seller among sergers in U.S.
