SINGER 2277 Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : MODERATE

SINGER 2277 is an entry level sewing machine from Singer. It has all the features that you get in a beginners machine. It has a decent number of built-in stitches. It comes with 23 built-in stitches including 6 essential stitches, 7 stretch stitches, 9 decorative stitches and a fully automatic 1-step buttonhole. It is great that Singer has provided 1-step buttonhole on this machine, I saw a Janome machine with the same price that came with a 4-step buttonhole. It is pretty lightweight as well. It just weighs around 13.6 pounds.

Once you go through all the features of  SINGER 2277, you will see that it is packed with a lot of features that too at a reasonable price. Singer projects the automatic needle threader as one of the premium features of this machine. Stitch selection can be made by turning the dial. Another dial is provided for adjusting the stitch width and length. The extra high presser foot lifter provides more clearance while working with thicker materials. You can store all the accessories in the on-board storage compartment. The machine can be used for free arm sewing by removing the on-board storage compartment. The tension can also be adjusted manually for refined results. It also features automatic bobbin winding. The built-in carry handle makes it portable. It comes with 25 year limited warranty as well.

As you can see, SINGER 2277 packs quite a lot of features. But it is one thing having all the features and another thing converting them into professional results.

Usability

This is a very compact sewing machine. The user manual is pretty clear on instructions. SINGER 2277 runs smoothy through thick and thin material. But I won’t recommend too many layers of thick fabrics like denim, as the machine seems to struggle a bit. The tension seems to be inconsistent while sewing multiple layers of denim. The overall performance of the machine is not excellent but it is manageable.

Limitations

I found the automatic needle threader tricky. It doesn’t seem to work all the time. Singer needs to fix it asap, if they want to sell more machines.

Tension seems to be off at times, especially when you switch from light to heavy fabrics. Stitches look awesome once you get the tension right.

The bobbin is side-loading type, which is kind of old fashioned. A beginner friendly drop-in bobbin would have done a world of good.

Pros

  • Good variety of features
  • Simple design
  • Low price

Cons

  • Automatic needle threader needs improvement
  • Not too good with multiple layers of thick fabrics

Verdict

Singer 2277 is not a machine without limitations, but for the price it is a good bargain. You will get a good variety of features at a very competitive price. If you are looking for a good quality, low cost beginners machine, you can also consider Brother XL2600I. It costs few dollars less than SINGER 2277. It is a highly rated machine and it is also listed among ‘Top 10 Sewing Machines Available In U.S Under $200‘.
