Brother SE270D Sewing And Embroidery Machine Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : MODERATE

Brother SE270D is a machine capable of doing normal sewing and embroidery. It is a machine packed with features. It is a computerized machine, which means the machine will do bulk of the work without any human intervention. It has an embroidery area of 4″x4″, which is not the largest by any means. It comes with 97 built-in designs which includes 27 Micky Mouse designs and 70 additional embroidery designs (floral and seasonal themes). The built-in stitches also include 10 1-step automatic buttonholes.  An LCD touch screen is provided to select the stitches and settings. The best thing about the screen is that, you can view different help tutorials on the screen itself. So you don’t need to pull out the user manual every time you have some doubts.Even better is the option to do the adjustments on the go. You can watch the tutorial and make adjustments to stitches even when you are sewing.

The work area is illuminated by 2 stay bright LEDs. Brother SE270D has a dial for adjusting the thread tension. This machine comes with Brother’s exclusive new quick-load thread cassette system. On other machines you will have to put the thread spool on top and guide the thread as per the threading guide and then thread the needle. With the quick-load thread cassette system, you just need to put the spool in the cassette and load the cassette into the machine. The machine will do the threading for you. The bobbin system is top drop-in. There is a memory card slot for importing embroidery designs.

Brother SE270D can sew at a speed of 400 stitches/minute, which is not the fastest by any means. You can sew with or without the foot pedal. The speed control slider lets you sew without the foot pedal. The maximum stitch width is 7mm and stitch length is 5mm. This machine also features 5 built-in monogramming fonts in 3 sizes. It comes with a 25 year limited warranty.

Usability

Most people love Brother SE270D for its versatility. You can easily convert the machine from embroidery to normal sewing. This is a very uncomplicated sewing machine, which makes it perfect for novice sewers. But it is not a beginners machines, you still need some sewing experience to make use of all the features on board. The ease of use is something that should be appreciated. The threading system is excellent and makes it easy to change colors. It is by far, the best threading system I have ever come across. This is a relatively quiet machine. It is a sturdy machine, not that light weight to carry around though.

You can add to your creativity by buying more designs from the internet, there are some quality ones for free as well. The Disney character designs that come with this machine looks cute. The embroidery once done looks very professional. I am very much impressed with the precision of stitches. It is pretty accurate without any issues.

Limitations

The thread cassette needs to be handled with extreme care as it is easily breakable. Another issue is noted under the verdict section.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • High quality stitches
  • Sewing and embroidery option
  • Excellent threading system
  • Memory card slot

Cons

  • Flimsy thread cassette
  • Machine may misbehave after couple of months

Verdict

While reviewing Brother SE270D, I didn’t encounter any issues at all. But some users have reported that this machine started to misbehave after couple of months use. Moreover, it is difficult to find a new machine, most of them on sale online are used ones. This suggests that something is wrong with this machine. Honestly I can’t really recommend this machine. You will be better of buying an embroidery machine with better reputation and quality. One model I could suggest is the Brother SE400. It features in the list of ‘Machines You Can Buy With Your Eyes Shut’ published by Sewing Machine Reviews. It oozes quality and has almost all the features of Brother SE270D. May be with less number of built-in stitches, but you can make up for the less number of stitches by importing designs via USB port.
