Brother SC6600 Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : LOW

SC6600 is a computerized beginners sewing machine. This model is not readily available at all stores, we will talk about the availability later, now let us focus on its features. It has 60 built-in stitches which include utility, decorative, heirloom stitches and 5 one-step buttonholes. Being a computerized sewing machine, there is an LCD screen for stitch selection and adjustments. There are separate buttons for stitch width and length adjustments. There is an automatic needle threader which nowadays is pretty common on computerized machines. Manual thread cutter is provided on the side. The easy drop-in bobbin system is very useful for beginners.

The needle position is variable. Drop feed feature is there for free motion quilting. There is a built-in storage compartment where you can store your accessories. Even though this is a computerized machine, it is not fully automatic, you can call it a semi-automatic machine. It doesn’t have a start/stop button or the sewing speed control slider which you normally see on fully-automatic sewing machines. Sewing speed is controlled by the foot controller. Brother SC6600 is free arm convertible which makes sewing cuffs and collars very easy. The sewing area is well lit by stay bright LED.

Usability

Even though Brother SC6600 is only a beginners machine, it still has a good variety of stitches to choose from. It is a lightweight machine, and is small enough to fit tight space. But personally, I really don’t care whether a machine is lightweight or not as long as it provides the quality I look for. I believe, quality should be the top priority of any sewer. SC6600 is a good machine for those who are starting out. Setting up is not overly difficult, same is the case with threading. The instructions are very clear in the user manual. So you shouldn’t have a trouble with that. The overall stitch quality is very satisfactory.

Limitations

It does have some thread tension issues.

Pros

  • Good for beginners
  • Variety of stitches
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Tension issues

Verdict

In spite of all the good things I can talk about Brother SC6600, the availability is still under question. It seems Brother has plans to take down this model or has already taken it down (not sure). There are a lot of refurbished and used models on sale but new ones are hardly available. I really don’t like the idea of buying used machines. If someone decides to sell his/her machine, there has to be something wrong with it, otherwise he/she will keep it. That is my theory regarding used machines, I won’t recommend used machines, it is a huge risk for me.

UPDATE : I think it is discontinued and replaced by CS6000i. Brother CS6000i comes with better features for more or less the same price. It is one among very few machines that made me say ‘WOW!’. Moreover it features in our list of ‘Machines You Can Buy With Your Eyes Shut’. Read Full Review
