Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : LOW

Singer Advance 7422 is an electronic sewing machine. It seems Singer has stopped its production (not quite sure). New machines are not readily available in U.S online stores, only used machines are there. If that is the case, then it may not be a good idea to buy this machine. Even though Singer may provide continued technical support, I am still uneasy about machines that are discontinued. But you may get it for heavy discounts, which is a good thing if you don’t have too much to spend but still wish to have a sewing machine with advanced features.

Singer 7422 has 30 built-in stitches including 2 one-step buttonholes, utility, decorative, quilting, heirloom and stretch stitches . It features an automatic needle threader. The machine is electronic, so it doesn’t have an LCD display. The machine is free arm capable. You can select the stitches with the touch of a button. Stitch length and width are automatically set, however you can override them for customization. Automatic lock stitch function provides a neat finish for decorative stitches. An accessory storage compartment is built-in, similar to other modern day sewing machines.

Singer 7422 has 13 needle positions. It features an easy to load top drop-in bobbin system. The clear cover for the bobbin is really handy as you can monitor the thread supply. The machine weighs 20 pounds, which is definitely on the heavier side. It comes with a dust cover as well. Singer 7422 has 25 year limited warranty.

Usability

Unfortunately what you see on paper doesn’t quite convert into performance in the case of Singer 7422. It’s performance is not up to the standards we expect from Singer. The thread gets caught in the bobbin very often. There are some timing issues as well. I am not quite satisfied with the performance of this machine. With all due respect to Singer, I have to say that they missed the trick with this machine.

Limitations

The automatic needle threader on Singer 7422 leaves a lot to be desired. It does take a fair bit of practice to get it working.

Pros

  • Honestly, nothing big to talk about

Cons

  • New machines are not available
  • Results are not quite impressive

Is It Worth Buying ?

The answer is a big no from me, until Singer fixes all the shortcomings. There are couple of reasons for it. One, the performance and quality on offer is not quite worth it. Secondly, it seems discontinued. Lack of quality might be the reason why Singer discontinued this model. Anyway, I am very disappointed with Singer 7422.

Two alternative sewing machines I can suggest are Singer 7258 and Brother CS6000i. Singer 7258 is by far the best beginners sewing machine from Singer. Currently it costs couple of dollars more than 7422 (Price difference may change in future) but offers quite a lot of features. And you will never question its quality. It is that good a machine. Moreover it has won Women’s Choice Award for the best home sewing machine in America. It has advanced features like 100 built-in stitches, programmable needle up/down, 6 one-step buttonholes etc.

If your budget doesn’t permit to buy Singer 7258, you can always consider Brother CS6000i. It is an excellent sewing machine with slightly lesser features than 7258. It costs less than 7258. This Brother machine is also listed in our “Machines You Can Buy With Your Eyes Shut” list. It has 60 built-in stitches. It is also the best beginners sewing machine in under $200 category.
