5 Best Sewing Machines For Quilting – Under $300

Here is the list of 5 Best Sewing Machines For Quilting – Under $300. Not all sewing machines are ideal for quilting. Sewing machines need to have some ‘must have’ features to qualify as a quilting machine.

Finding the best sewing machine for quilting is always a tough job. The first hurdle is to decide how much you can actually spend on a quilting machine. Quilting machine price ranges from few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. Here we are limiting our list to 5 sewing machines that cost under $300. A lot of hard work has been put into this list as we had to test a lot of machines. Most of them were omitted due to low performance (hence the list of only 5 machines). We could have easily made a list of 10 sewing machines, but if we do that, a lot of poor quality machines will creep into the list, which is like cheating our readers. So please bear with us.

Nowadays, quilting machines come with hell of a lot of bells and whistles. It is very confusing to be honest. Most of them are expensive and it is even harder for a person under budget to find the best sewing machine for quilting. There are certain features that I consider to be ‘must have’ on a quilting machine. You need to make sure that the machine you buy has all those ‘must have’ features.

Must Have Features

Quality : Top priority for me. Don’t even think of buying a machine if it is of low quality, no matter how many features it has. I am a picky person and I rate quality and performance above all other features. I don’t mind having a quality 10 stitch machine rather than living with a poor quality 100 stitch sewing machine.

Straight Stitch, Zig Zag and Blind Hem : A sewing machine that does a wonderful straight stitch, zig zag stitch and blind hem is a must for a quilter. Quality straight stitches do make a difference while piecing or quilting. Zig Zag and Blind Hem are essential while doing machine applique.

Powerful Motor : This is not just for quilters, it applies for everyone. Motor is the heart of a sewing machine and a powerful one is always welcome.

Drop Feed Lever : This is a must have for doing free-motion quilting. Discard the machine if this feature is not present.

Programmable Needle Up/Down : An absolute must have for quilters. Don’t even think of buying a machine that lacks this feature. A machine having needle up/down button is like having an extra hand. It is vital for pivoting.

Speed Control Slider : Ability to control the sewing speed and sew without the foot pedal is always a welcome feature.

Decorative Stitches : A wide variety of decorative stitches will give you more room for creativity.

Throat Space & Quilting Table : Throat space, the bigger, the better. An oversized table for quilting is a must have for larger quilts.

HC1850 is another quality machine. It comes with 130 built-in stitches and wide table. Its price was unjustifiable in the past, but now it seems affordable. But still it is not a great deal as you can get DZ2400 which has 185 stitches for more or less the same price.
