Brother SC3000 ReviewSewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : HIGH

SC3000 is a recently launched computerized sewing machine. It isn’t widely available yet, only a couple of stores have this machine in stock. The machine being a new one, I can’t really comment on the durability factor. Let us go through the features first. This is a machine designed for intermediate sewers. Brother SC3000 comes with 190 built-in stitches including 8 one-step buttonholes.

You can use this machine for basic monogramming, thanks to the 2 built-in sewing fonts, each with 55 alphanumeric stitches. The LCD screen is of reasonable size (the extra large screen size is just a marketing gimmick, it is not that large). However, you won’t have any trouble in reading the stitch settings as it is backlit. Even old people with poor eyesight can easily read the settings. The automatic needle threader makes threading easy.

The stitches are selected by pressing the buttons provided next to the screen. Even though the stitch width and length are automatic, you can override them for customization. The maximum stitch width is 7mm and stitch length is 5mm (this provides enough variety). The sewing start/stop button and speed control slider are conveniently located.

Brother SC3000 being a sewing and quilting machine, has programmable needle up/down button. It is an absolute must have for quilters. The reverse sewing button though small, is conveniently located. The 7-point feed dogs ensure consistent fabric feeding. There is a drop feed option to do free-motion quilting as well.

Brother SC3000 comes with an easy to load top drop-in bobbin. There is an independent bobbin winding motor which lets you wind the bobbin while sewing. The work space measures to 3.9″ x  5.75″. An LED work light illuminates the work space reasonably well. The motor has the same power as that of all other entry level Brother computerized sewing machines. The motor can deliver 850 stitches/min.

SC3000 belongs to the group of lightweight sewing machines. At just 12.1 pounds, you can easily carry it. The machine comes with an extra wide table which lets you work on large projects with ease. There is an included hard cover as well. In addition to this, SC3000 comes with a circular sewing attachment and 14 accessory feet. The machine has 25 year limited warranty.

Usability

Brother SC3000 behaves like a typical Brother computerized sewing machine. Those who had previous experience with any Brother computerized machine will be at ease with SC3000. The 190 built-in stitches provide quite a lot of variety. In fact, you may not even use most of the stitches during the entire lifetime of the machine. The machine is very user-friendly, you can say that it is almost a frustration free sewing machine. The stitch quality is very good. The performance on multiple layers of thick fabrics like denim is good.

Limitations

Brother SC3000 misses out on one feature, the automatic thread cutter. Brother could have easily included an automatic thread cutter at this price point. Even older machines like Brother SE400 has it.

Even though SC3000 has good build quality, I can’t really comment on durability as it is a new kid in the block.

Pros

  • Variety of stitches
  • Stitch quality
  • User friendly
  • Portable

Cons

  • No automatic thread cutter

Is It Worth Buying?

Overall, I am very much satisfied with what Brother SC3000 brings to the table. It is a complete package. The only concern is the price. To me, it feels a tad bit overpriced. Better pricing and it is an absolute steal.
