  • 6 stitch types
  • Free arm capability
  • Color-coded threading system

SINGER 14CG754 ProFinish Serger Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : HIGH

SINGER 14CG754 is a good, inexpensive serger with 2-3-4 thread capability. You can choose 2 or 3 or 4 thread stitch depending on your project. This machine seems to have a very good motor inside, it is capable of sewing at a speed of 1300 stitches/minute. It comes with 6 different stitch types including 4 built-in rolled hems. You can do 2-thread wrapped edge overlock, 2-thread standard rolled hem, 3-thread wrapped edge overlock, 3-thread flatlock, 3-thread overlock stitch and 4-thread stretch mock safety stitch on this machine. The color coded threading system saves time (not a big surprise as it is pretty much standard in all sergers).

One good feature of SINGER 14CG754 is the differential feed control which controls how much fabric is fed through the machine. You can set it to gather fabric or stretch fabric mode depending on your requirements. You can easily sew cuffs and sleeves with the optional free arm. For free arm sewing, you just need to remove the cloth plate. You can easily adjust the tension to make consistent stitches.

You can easily set SINGER 14CG754 to rolled hem sewing mode by using the lever. The machine weighs around 17 pounds which is pretty much the average weight of an entry-level serger. It has a carry handle to make it portable. Another good feature of this serger is the moveable upper knife. I have seen this feature in more expensive machines but not at this price for sure. Basically what this does is that, it prevents fabric trimming while sewing. Stitch length can be adjusted by turning the knob. There is an extra high presser foot lifter for working with multiple layers of fabrics.

Included accessories

  • All purpose foot
  • Needles
  • Tweezers
  • Spreader
  • Screwdriver

Usability

SINGER 14CG754 comes threaded in the box. It is not that difficult to thread the machine either. The machine is slightly on noisy side. This machine seems to be a victim of false reviews done by people who really doesn’t understand how it works. I am really surprised with the negative reviews. The stitches come out smooth and consistent, giving a professional finish to your projects. It doesn’t require much maintenance when compared to other expensive sergers.

Some had trouble with threading, it is more of an operator error than a machine error. You will find it much easier, if you read, understand the instructions and thread. The knife cutter is awesome. It cuts thread nice and clean. The differential feed seems to work perfect. Free arm is something that you don’t see on all sergers, especially on an inexpensive one like this.

Limitations

SINGER 14CG754 is a loud machine but not unbearable. The spool holders look flimsy.

Pros

  • High quality stitches
  • Highly efficient differential feed system
  • Free arm sewing
  • Extra-high presser foot lifter
  • Moveable upper knife
  • Mind blowing price

Cons

  • Noisy
  • Flimsy spool holders

Verdict

The capabilities of SINGER 14CG754 is highly underestimated. This serger deserves some appreciation. You can’t get a better serger for this price, I bet. It sews smoothly and stitches come out perfect. I still doesn’t understand why this machine doesn’t have a higher rating. Forget the quality this machine, just have a look at the price, it will blow you right off your feet. There is no substitute machine for this price for sure.
