Janome 8002D Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : HIGH

The first thing I noticed about this serger is that, it has almost 100% positive feedback from its users. So I thought I would do a review on it. 8002D is 3 and 4 thread convertible. I am not trying to bore you by saying it has nice features and all. Let us go through the features rather than saying ‘ahh it will give you high quality seams and professional finish and stuffs like that’.

The threading chart is color coded to make threading easy, it may not be that easy for beginners. You will be better of watching a YouTube video or instructional DVD before threading it. The differential feed mechanism ensures consistent results. It can be adjusted using a dial from 0.5mm to 2.25mm. Built-in rolled hem will be one feature that most people will be looking for and Janome 8002D has it. The best part is that, you can convert to rolled hem without removing the needle plate. How cool is that ? This machine can sew at a speed of 1,300 stitches/min, which for me, is very fast.

Some other features of this serger are

  • 3 or 4 thread overlock stitching capability
  • External tension dials
  • Rolled hem changeover device
  • Adjustable foot pressure
  • Feed adjustment by dial
  • Cutting width adjustment dial
  • Aligned spool type thread stand
  • Built-in thread cutter
  • 1 to 4mm feed adjustment
  • Cutting width 3.1 – 7.3mm
  • Retractable upper knife
  • Snap-on presser feet

This machine weighs 15 pounds. It just qualifies as a portable serger. It comes with 25 year limited warranty as well.

Usability

You will be better of trying it with some scrap  material initially to get used to the working of the machine. The included DVD is great help for threading. Watch it at least a couple of times before trying your hand. The machine comes pre-threaded with white thread. It is a quiet machine, which I personally like a lot as it won’t wake up my baby. I am really impressed with the quality this serger can offer. Yes, this machine costs few dollars more than the entry level Brother machine, but it seems very good.

One thing that can work against Janome 8002D is that the brand Janome itself is not quite popular among we American people. Janome is a global leader in industrial sewing machines and those who own a Janome machine will be well aware of its quality. Most people complain that Janome machines are expensive than other machines, there is a reason to it. And the reason is, quality. I am not trying to convince you to buy this machine, just wanted to point out about its quality.

The machine operates smoothly. You can have full control over this machine. As a beginner, it gives a lot of confidence and you will feel more creative. It is sturdy as well.

Limitations

It doesn’t do cover stitch. Also, the threading is slightly complicated. You will have to watch the DVD closely to understand the pattern.

Pros

  • Sturdy
  • Smooth and quiet operation
  • Portable
  • Quality stitches
  • Strong motor
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Slightly complicated threading

Verdict

Once you take out the complicated threading system, it is a wonderful machine. The ease of use and quality of stitches makes it popular among its users. Only a few people bought this machine and I don’t know why. Those who bought, have all the praises for Janome 8002D. It ranks 7th in our list of ‘Top 10 Best Sergers Available in U.S’.
