Brother LB6800PRW is a computerized sewing and embroidery machine. This belongs to the Project Runway series of sewing machines rolled out by Brother. The first look reveals that it is packed with features. It has quite a lot of stitches to choose from. It comes with 67 built-in sewing stitches, 98 stitch functions, 70 built-in embroidery designs, 120 frame pattern combinations and 5 embroidery lettering fonts. It has 4″x4″ embroidery capabilities. It also has 10 1-step buttonholes.
The 67 built-in sewing stitches of Brother LB6800PRW include utility, heirloom, quilting and decorative stitches. 70 built-in embroidery designs include floral, holiday and animal and kids’ designs. Customization options for designs are just amazing. You can do mirror image, enlarge and reduce the size of designs as you like. Creativity doesn’t end there, you can import designs from iBroidery.com and other sites via the USB port. USB cable comes included. Moreover, you can update the machine to the latest version of software via USB. Brother will periodically update their machine software to improve the sewing experience. There is also a slot for inserting Brother embroidery cards, which is pretty much old fashioned nowadays.
Because this is a computerized machine, stitch length, width, tension and all other settings are automatically set for optimal sewing. However, you can customize them if you want. The speed control slider lets you go slower and faster according to your requirements, so you don’t need to use the foot pedal all the time. There is a button for reverse stitching as well. I love the automatic thread cutter on Brother LB6800PRW. You don’t have to go searching for the scissors every time you need to cut the thread. It cuts thread nice and short. The needle up/down button is also another nice feature, quilters will love it. This machine also has an upper and bobbin thread sensor, which will warn you when you are low on thread. This machine is twin needle capable as well.
Brother LB6800PRW has an embroidery area of 4″x4″, which is pretty much the standard for the price range. The bobbin system is drop-in. All features and settings can be viewed on the easy-to-use LCD touch screen display. Built-in tutorials is another nice feature from Brother. With this, you can view the tutorials on LCD screen itself, so you don’t need to go through the user manual all the time. This machine comes with 7 point feed dogs system which allows smooth fabric feeding. This machine can be easily converted to free arm by removing the accessory storage compartment.
Brother LB6800PRW has a brightly lit work area. Brother always paid attention to the lighting system, unlike Singer which has pretty poor lighting in majority of the machines. Unlike other Brother machines of the same category, this one comes with a Project Runway rolling bag. It has 25 year limited warranty.
Usability
The best thing about Brother LB6800PRW is that it has sewing and embroidery capabilities. If you are having an embroidery only machine, you will have to buy another machine for regular sewing. Why spend money on two separate machines, when you can get both functions in a single machine?
This machine comes with a very well written user manual. It is very easy to read and understand the instructions.Another point is that you can connect this machine to your computer and download any design you like. It gives you a lot of room for creativity. It comes with a standard 4″x4″ embroidery hoop, but you can buy larger hoops and it will work just fine. This machine handles multiple layers of denim without a hitch. You needle little fabric adjustment while sewing on this machine as the fabric is consistently fed straight. The automatic needle threader works perfect. It is a flawless machine.
You will have to use the stabilizer while working with thin fabrics. Brother recommends using a stabilizer but I think, it is a must.
Limitations
One limitation I could spot is that it is priced high for just a rolling bag.

Verdict
Overall, Brother LB6800PRW is an excellent machine. I couldn’t find any issue with the performance of this machine. It is one of the best embroidery machines you can get in U.S under $400. But one thing I didn’t like about this machine is its price. This machine is the same as Brother SE400 except that LB6800PRW comes with a rolling bag. Brother is charging more for just the bag. Compare the prices of both machines before you buy. My advice to you is, if you are not really bothered about the bag, buy SE400 if it is cheaper and then spend the remaining money to buy larger embroidery hoops. SE400 is also listed in ‘Machines You Can Buy With Your Eyes Shut’.
