DC3050 is a computerized sewing machine from Janome. I believe, some people are still not quite aware of the brand Janome. Janome is a Japanese sewing machine manufacturer. They have been making sewing machine since 1921. Their machines are sold worldwide. So you don’t need to worry about the quality of Janome. The quality of materials used on Janome machines can never be questioned. They never use cheap plastic on the body. In fact Janome makes one of the best heavy-duty sewing machines in U.S, which is the HD1000 model.

Now, coming back to the review of Janome DC3050. On paper, the features of DC3050 are pretty basic. It doesn’t boast of 200 built-in stitches and stuffs like that. It has 50 built-in stitches which include 3 1-step buttonholes, 24 Heirloom stitches, 6 Satin Decorative stitches and a bi-directional blanket stitch. The machine has a needle up/down button which is a very important feature needed by quilters. The auto-lock button lets you secure the end of a seam.

As expected, it has an automatic needle threader on board. The superior feed system (SFS they call it) ensures consistent quality without puckering. Being a computerized sewing machine, it has a wonderful LCD screen with bright display. All the adjustments can be seen right on the screen. You can adjust stitch length and width by looking at the screen. The tension is set automatically by the machine. The bobbin system is top loading, with a transparent cover which is really nice as you can keep an eye on the thread supply. Janome DC3050 has an extra high presser foot lifter for providing extra clearance while working with multiple layers of fabric.

The machine has 15 needle positions. The machine is slightly on the heavier side weighing around 16 pounds. It has a retractable carrying handle to improve its portability. There is a halogen light bulb to provide lighting. It comes with a 25 year limited warranty cover.

Usability

Even though Janome DC3050 doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, it is a fabulous machine. The machine has good number of useful stitches, and all of them are easy to select. The automatic tension on this machine is absolutely mind blowing. It adjusts the tension seamlessly with different kind of fabrics. I think this machine has the best auto tension feature I have ever come across. There is no need to adjust the tension manually, the machine does it for you perfectly. The auto-lock feature is a real time saver as you don’t have to hit the reverse button and go back an forth if you don’t want to. Little things like this make a huge difference to the quality of the stitches. It may not sound much, but it does make a difference.

Janome DC3050 is quite sturdy. The operation is very smooth, it doesn’t make a lot of vibrations while operating. This machine can handle whatever you throw at it. Heavy weight or light weight material, it does an equally good job. Cottons, silk, flannel, denim, be it any kind of fabric, it sews through all. The speed control slider is another useful feature. Some may want to go slow especially the beginners and the speed control allows you to sew at an extremely slow pace.

Limitations

There is nothing to hate about this machine. There needs to be some improvement with the automatic needle threader. Couple of attempts are required to get used to it, that is all.

Is It Worth Buying ?

If you are looking for a sewing machine that works equally well on all kinds of fabric, Janome DC3050 is the best bet. This has to be one of the best performers in the price category. Still I don’t understand why more people are not buying it, probably it is because they are not available right now. If you buy this machine, I am sure that you won’t be disappointed. Those who own this machine, absolutely love it.

There is an issue with this machine. Janome has stopped its production (they really didn’t need to). So it will be difficult to find a new machine. Definitely buy it if you can find a new one rather than the new version. Janome DC3050 has been replaced by Janome DC2014 which also is an excellent sewing machine with all the same features of DC3050. You will also get a few extra accessories along with Janome DC2014.
