Brother SQ9050 Review

Even though Brother SQ9050 is feature rich, it doesn’t quite impress us with performance. Especially when you can get better alternatives from Brother itself.

Brother SQ9050 Main Features

  • 100 built-in stitches
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Needle position button
  • Portable
  • Wide table

Brother SQ9050 Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : LOW

SQ9050 is the upgraded version of SQ9000 with an addition 20 built-in stitches. It seems Brother has completely replaced SQ9000 with SQ9050. SQ9050 is a computerized sewing and quilting machine. Its price seems quite reasonable, when you consider the features on board. It has 100 built-in stitches which include utility, decorative, heirloom, and quilting stitches. You will also get 55 alphanumeric stitches for basic monogramming and 8 one-step buttonholes along with the machine.

Brother SQ9050 comes with a large quilting table which is enough to handle any kind of project irrespective of its complexity. The back lit LCD display is of decent size, even those people with sight trouble won’t have much of a trouble. Being a computerized sewing machine, it has a start/stop button and speed control slider. The sewing area is illuminated by LEDs. It features an automatic needle threader as well. It has drop feed for free motion quilting.

Brother SQ9050 comes with an easy to use top drop-in bobbin. The motor of this sewing machine is capable of delivering 850 stitches/min. The maximum stitch width is 7mm and stitch length is 5mm. The machine is free arm capable. The needle up/down button is another huge advantage of this machine. It is one feature that makes it a quilters’ delight. The machine is incredibly light, weighs just 9.9 pounds. Actually it is one of the lightest advanced sewing machines I have reviewed in the recent past. So taking it to sewing class is very easy. SQ9050 has 25 year limited warranty. You will also get quite a lot of accessories along with this machine.

Usability

Brother SQ9050 looks quite good with all those sticker guides telling you which part means what. The initial set up is a breeze. However, reading the instruction booklet thoroughly is always recommended, especially if you haven’t used a machine for a while. The LCD display and stitch selection buttons are quite easy to understand and use. The machine will also tell you which presser foot to use for a particular stitch. The machine is fantastic on light weight materials but seems to struggle a little bit with multiple layers of denim.

Limitations

Even though SQ9050 looks good on paper, it doesn’t quite convert into performance. It seems to have some issues with thick fabrics.

Pros

  • Lot of features
  • Affordable
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to use
  • Wide table

Cons

  • Struggles with multiple layers of denim

Is It Worth Buying ?

When you look at the features of Brother SQ9050, it looks good. It is one thing having good features and another thing converting them into performance. Performance and quality wise, I am not quite impressed with SQ9050. To be honest, I don’t feel like recommending this machine to you especially when you can get an even better quilting machine from Brother for lesser price. The model I am talking about is the Brother Designio DZ2400. It is a wonderful machine and has some useful features that you won’t get on SQ9050.

The extra features you get are

  • Presser foot pressure adjustment
  • 30 more built-in stitches
  • 12 sewing and quilting feet (You have to purchase this separately on SQ9050)

All other features are the same, both machines even weigh the same. I don’t quite understand the pricing of SQ9050 as you can get a better machine for fewer dollars. Brother Designio DZ2400 is definitely the better quilting machine. Being a Designio series machine there won’t be any shortage of included accessories, you will get a lot of accessories. One more interesting statistics I would like to share with you is, 23 DZ2400’s are sold when 1 SQ9050 is sold. This clearly tells you which machine is better.
