How to choose electric sewing machines

Are you just learning how to sew with an electric sewing machine?  If so, you may be wondering how to choose the best sewing machine.  There are several characteristics that you want to look for in a sewing machine.  One of the most important aspects of a sewing machine is the action.  The action is how well the needle goes up and down while you are sewing.  Some sewing machines have a very clunky action and that can make for choppy seams.

Another aspect that you want to look into when buying an electric sewing machine is what kind of sounds it makes.  Some machines can be extremely loud and noisy.  If you plan on doing a lot of sewing, then you are going to want to choose a machine that is not too loud.  This is especially important if you live with other people or live in an apartment where noise is an issue.  Not to mention that a loud electric sewing machine can be extremely annoying.

A very important aspect when buying an electric sewing machine is what features you are looking for in a machine.  The higher quality the sewing machine, the more stitching features it will offer.  Extra features can be very helpful with your sewing projects, especially if you are using advanced methods such as making button holes.

An important feature that should be available on any electric sewing machine is that it should be able to sew in reverse.  Also, it’s important in how you make it reverse.  Does it use a button or a switch?  When you are sewing, you want things to flow.  So, you need to have an idea as to whether the button or switch placement on the machine is in a good position.  These are all matters of personal preference and will be different from person to person.

A lot of people feel that the more metal on a sewing machine means that it is a higher quality product.  This used to be true about 10 years ago.  Today, there are a lot of high quality plastics, which offer both lightness and durability.  If you plan on moving your electric sewing machine from place to place, then you are going to want a machine that is made of a lighter material (i.e. plastic).

One of the basic decisions you need to make when buying a sewing machine is how fancy of a machine to start with.  The answer is basically going to be determined by your skill level and commitment to sewing.  If you are brand new to sewing, then a very simple starter sewing machine might be a good option.  A simpler sewing machine will be easy to set-up and not have many options for you to figure out.  The more advanced machines are going to come with a rather large owner’s manual and take some time to set-up.  However, the more involved you get in sewing, the more advanced features you will want in your sewing machine.  So, if you think that you’ll really get into sewing, then spend the money upfront and buy a really nice electric sewing machine.
