Sunbeam SB1800 Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : MODERATE

SB1800 model is very similar to the SB1818 which we reviewed earlier. Both machines seem to have the same features in fact. This machine is ideal for your basic hemming works. It comes with 12 built-in stitches, which really is a decent number for a low budget sewing machine. It has a lever for reverse sewing. It has dual speed settings with low and high speeds. It can be operated with the foot controller as well.

SB1800 comes with a carry handle. This machine is extremely light, so portability will never be an issue. A tension adjuster is also provided. There is a manual thread cutter on the side. It has a sewing light for working in the dark. One good feature is the drop-in bobbin system, which is perfect for beginners. You normally won’t get drop-in bobbins on such basic machines. This machine is free arm capable as well.

Usability

You must approach Sunbeam SB1800 with low expectations. Otherwise you might get disappointed. The machine comes threaded in the box. It is not overly difficult to thread the machine. The machine holds up pretty good for basic hemming. Stitches are of reasonable quality but it could be better.

Limitations

Most of the disappointment factor comes from over expectations. Yes, you may run into trouble with loose stitches and tension issues occasionally. And it is not a machine designed for regular sewing, so don’t expect top quality stitches from this machine. The build quality is not that great either. After all, you can’t expect a heavy-duty machine for such a low price.

Pros

  • Low cost
  • 12 built-in stitches
  • Drop-in bobbin system
  • Operation with and without the foot pedal
  • Great for quick mending
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Occasional loose stitches
  • Poor build quality

Verdict

Sunbeam SB1800 is perfect for quick mending and hemming. This machine might do the job, if you are doing just basic stuffs. It is not that bad a machine for a beginner. You can consider this one, if you are looking for a low cost machine for your little princess.

If you are really serious about quality, you will be better of considering Brother LS2125i. You just need to spend couple of dollars more. It ranks 4th in the Sewing Machine Reviews list of ‘Top 10 Sewing Machines Under $200’.
