Janome 2222 Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : LOW

Janome 2222 is a mechanical sewing machine designed with beginners in mind. Only a full review will tell whether this machine is ideal for beginners or not. It’s a beautiful looking sewing machine with all those dials and stuffs in front. Now, let us have a close look at this machine. Janome 2222 comes with 22 built-in stitches which also includes a 1-step buttonhole. The overall design is pretty good, the dials and reverse lever are quite large making it easy to use for older people.

The machine features an automatic needle threader for easy threading (this has become a default feature on all sewing machines now). The bobbin is front loading type which is not a beginner friendly feature for sure. In this case, you need to remove the accessory storage compartment to get access to the bobbin housing. This means that you need to remove the accessory tray every time you need to rewind the bobbin. Even bigger bummer is that, you need to stop sewing and remove the accessory tray to access drop feed control. This is a huge time waster when you need to do free-motion sewing.

Stitch selection, length and width adjustments are done with the help of dials. Maximum stitch width is 5mm and stitch length is 4mm. Thread tension can be manually adjusted. The presser feet are snap-on type, so that you can change them easily. Remove the accessory compartment and you can convert it to free arm sewing for sewing cuffs and sleeves. Janome 2222 also has an extra high presser foot lifter, which is really helpful while sewing bulky fabrics. This machine has a slightly more powerful motor than its competitors. It’s motor is capable of delivering 860 stitches/min. Most competitors have 850SPM speed, it is not a huge difference though.

The machine comes with a retractable handle for better portability. The machine weighs around 13 pounds, so it is not overly heavy. A sewing light is provided for illuminating the work space. It comes with an included dust cover as well.

Usability

Initially the stitches doesn’t look like the ones in the stitch chart. You need to tweak the stitch width and length a little bit to make them look exactly like those in the stitch chart. But the stitch quality is pretty good, once you get the settings right. The variety of stitches on-board is quite good. The build quality is very good, something that Janome will never disappoint.

Limitations

Modern sewers are so much used to drop-in bobbin and easy to engage feed dog lever, in that case Janome 2212 might look like a step backward. If you have previously owned a sewing machine with those features, you will find it difficult to deal with.

Pros

  • Affordable

Cons

  • Not ideal for beginners

Is It Worth Buying ?

Ideally, you can’t call Janome 2222 a user-friendly sewing machine. Some features are not really ideal for beginners. It’s performance is still good though. The alternatives you can consider are Janome HD3000 and Janome 8077. The former is a mechanical machine and the later is a computerized one. Both are slightly expensive than Janome 2222 but are excellent, for beginners.
