Singer 5625 Stylist II Review

Singer 5625 Stylist II ReviewSewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : MODERATE

5625 is an electronic sewing machine from Singer, which didn’t quite make an impact. The machine came loaded with features though. It has 227 built-in stitches including 6 one-step buttonholes and an endless buttonhole. Endless buttonhole lets you sew buttonholes that are of different sizes than the regular ones (this is one feature that you find on expensive sewing machines. So you can consider this one as a premium feature). Do not mistake Singer 5625 for a computerized machine, it is just an electronic sewing machine. So it will miss out on features like sewing start/stop and speed control slider for sewing without the foot pedal.

Stitches can be selected by the touch of a button. The LCD screen will display the selected stitch and its optimal stitch width and length. The screen is not back lit, which is a downer. Drop-in bobbin with clear cover makes changing bobbin an easy job. Singer says that 5625 Stylist II has swift smart threading system for easy threading. But threading is one area where I think it needed improvement. The automatic needle threader threads the needle in a snap.

Singer 5625 comes with a built-in block style font and numeric stitches for basic monogramming. Automatic tacking stitch and tie-off function can be used for securing stitches. Automatic reverse button is also provided. All the stitches can be adjusted for their stitch width and length. The maximum stitch width is 7mm. Programmable needle up/down is one feature that is essential for quilters. It is handy while pivoting and removing fabric.

Electronic twin needle control button automatically adjusts stitches for twin needle sewing. 13 needle positions can be used for a variety of tasks like inserting zippers, cording and top stitching. Singer 5625 has a built-in memory to save up to 20 different names or small phrases. Stitches can be mirror imaged with the touch of a button. The continuous pattern button lets you sew individual stitches as a pattern.

The machine has pattern override memory, which basically remembers the edited stitch length or width for a particular pattern for future use. The motor inside Singer 5625 is not special. It is the same motor that is inside Singer’s under $200 machines. It can deliver a maximum of 750 stitches/min. Tension and presser foot pressure control are automatic. There is an extra high presser foot lifter for placing bulky fabrics. You can sew circular areas by converting the machine to free arm by removing the accessory storage compartment. It has drop feed for free-motion quilting.

There are 3 LED bulbs to illuminate the work space. At last Singer has attended the work light issue, thank God. Some of their models have very poor lighting, not this one. 6 segment feed system with box motion ensures consistent stitch quality. A manual thread cutter is provided on the side of the machine, so you don’t need to reach out for your scissors.Singer 5625 has a unique optimum power control feature that sends additional power while sewing 6-8 layers of fabric.

The machine comes with a carry handle. The machine can also be mounted to a sewing cabinet. It comes with a dust cover as well.

Usability

Apart from the slightly difficult threading, it is an easy machine to use for the most part. The quality of stitches are good.

Limitations

The user manual needs improvement. A more detailed information about threading would have made things a lot easier.

Is It Worth Buying?

Currently, I am not sure about the availability of Singer 5625. It is not widely available. Another Singer machine that has similar features is the Singer One Plus. No one doubts the quality of One Plus, it is that good a machine. One Plus is a fully computerized sewing machine with 221 built-in stitches. It’s quality has took One Plus to our list of ‘Machines You Can Buy With Your Eyes Shut’. So you can consider this machine as an alternative to 5625.
