Singer 4432 Review

Sewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : HIGH

If you search for a heavy duty sewing machine under $200, it is almost guaranteed that, you will come across Singer 4432. Because it is the most popular heavy duty machine in that segment. This machine belongs to Singer’s ’44’ series of entry level heavy duty sewing machines. The good thing is that, all the ’44’ series machines are great performers and all of them received great feedback from its users. The only machine that struggled slightly is the 4411, which is mainly due to the lack of some beginner friendly features.

Singer 4432 has 32 built-in stitches on board (denoted by the last two digits of the model number). The built-in stitches include 6 Basic Stitches, 7 Stretch Stitches, 18 Decorative Stitches and a 1-step buttonhole. The automatic needle threader saves eye strain. The bobbin is top drop-in type, which is very beginner friendly. It even has a clear cover, through which you can always monitor the bobbin thread supply. You can easily change the presser feet, thanks to the snap-on feet.

Stitch selection is done by turning the dial. There are two dials in front, one is for stitch selection and the other for stitch length adjustment. Stitch length and width are adjustable. The maximum stitch width is 6mm. The reverse sewing lever is conveniently located. Singer 4432 has 3 needle positions as well.

One of the highlights of Singer 4432 is its motor. The motor is a gem. It is power packed. The motor can deliver 1,100 stitches/min, which easily makes it the most powerful motor in the price bracket. Even $500 machines don’t have motors of such power. Even though Singer says it is 60% more powerful, my experience says it is somewhere around 35% more powerful than other machines in the price segment. The extra power is always handy while sewing multiple layers of thick fabrics.

The heavy duty metal frame makes the machine stable at all speeds. There is a built-in storage compartment to store all the accessories. Once you remove the storage compartment, you can access free arm to sew cuffs and sleeves. An extra high presser foot lifter is provided to give more clearance for multiple layers of fabrics.

Usability

Singer 4432 is a beginner friendly machine. Singer has equipped every possible beginner friendly feature on this machine. Be it the automatic needle threader or top drop-in bobbin or 1-step buttonhole. The stitch quality of this machine is very good. The powerful motor works its magic on multiple layers. The machine can easily sew 6 layers of denim. However, use heavy duty needle while sewing denim and go slow. The machine has good range of speeds. High speeds are really handy on quilts (and believe me, it is fast). There is nice variety of stitches to experiment. The machine is portable as well. Weighing just around 15 pounds, you can easily move it. But it is heavy enough to prevent any vibrations at high speeds. You don’t need to worry about high speed stability at all (It is not a dancing machine, thank God).

Limitations

The user manual is not great. All the instructions are not clear. So you will be better of watching some YouTube videos, especially for threading.

The machine though heavy duty, is not all metal. Most external parts are made of plastic. The build quality is decent, but don’t mistake it for an all metal mechanical sewing machine.

Even though the machine can handle multiple layers, more than 8 layers of denim seems a bit of struggle.

The foot pedal is very sensitive. It picks up speed with just a touch.

Pros

  • Beginner friendly
  • Powerful motor
  • Good stitch quality
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Poor user manual
  • Not all metal
  • Sensitive foot pedal

Is It Worth Buying?

At the price point, yes. For the price, Singer 4432 is the best heavy duty sewing machine you can get. It may not be a 100% perfect machine, but it ticks all the check boxes from a beginners point of view. That is the reason why Singer 4432 is the best selling heavy duty sewing machine under $200.
